the Neverland come alive

I have started a business. Although I don't really like calling it that. It is something that is very filling for my soul. All of my life I have loved books, so much. I think my mom's favorite story she loves to tell of me, is one about just that. She tells people that when I was little, I would call her into the bathroom when I was done doing my business, so that she could wipe me. She says though, that she finally drew the line when one day, she came into the bathroom and found me reading a large novel. In my defense however, I was probably about five years old. I am now a librarian and have been one for almost eighteen years.

I also love yarn. Though more recently, for about 9 years; when I picked up my first knitting needles and knit a child's sweater for my first project. It was upon the suggestion of my friend Dotty, who happens to own the most delightful shop, The Net Loft. I had come into the shop wanting to sign up for a needlework class; but she said that there were none available at that time and that she knew that I would love to knit, and that I should take her intro. class. I protested beyond belief. No, I mean I really went on and on and on. Knitting was not for me. I just could not see myself knitting. Why would I want to...and so on. She insisted, and told me that if I didn't like it, that she would refund me completely. Well, she twisted my arm, and I came to the first class, and was frustrated and I didn't want to come to the second class. Come one more time she said...and the rest as it has been heard to say is history. How could she have done such a dreadful thing to me? I LOVE IT!!! I have not stopped knitting since that second class.

And so now I have put together my two loves and started: Skeins in the Stacks. My Yarn Launching was at The Net Loft. How could it not be? It was held on September 15th, 2012. The sweetest people showed up. Just before it began, I confessed to Dotty that I was nervous, and she said, "But why? There will just be friends here." She was right once again. It was set up so beautifully, thanks to Dotty's impeccable taste. The party was lovely and a success.

My first colorways were based on the book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The colorways were: The Little Jacket and the Shoes, Camomile Tea, and Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail. You can find photos from the launching here: Skeins in the Stacks (Thank you Dotty!) and here Bunny Inspired Goodness (Thank you Mrs, Dilly-Dally!), and I believe there are still some skeins available here: thenetloftak.com.

For the second release I was inspired by the story of The Mitten. For photos see here: The Holiday Fun Continues!

Now, this past Saturday was my third release at The Net Loft. These colorways were based on Barrie's classic tale of Peter Pan and Wendy and for the first time my yarns will be stocked in my Etsy shop on August 31st. To get this yarn right now (as they are a limited edition release) you can go here: thenetloftak.com, or on August 31st you can go here: Skeins in the Stacks. I hope you enjoy the yarn as much as I enjoyed making it.

P.S. The artwork for my yarn (labels, bookmarks, etc.) was done by this fabulous artist from Italy. She is amazing. You can check out her work here: valentina capellino illustrations. Thank you Vale!
The Party
For decorations we were going to hang glittered stars, but we put twinkle lights on the tables instead. It was lovely. My cousin was there to help decorate and she brought in ferns, which really helped to set the whole scene. She also knitted a sample scarf/neck wrap with The Mermaids' Lagoon in 400 London (pictured above). It really showcased how beautifully the yarn knits up. By the way, if you are looking for lotion for dry hands that isn't greasy, she came up with some great lotion bars. There are still some available at The Net Loft. I am hoping she will open an Etsy shop, as it is such a great product.
700 Potter: "If you believe...clap your hands..."
What does that number mean? What does an author's name have to do with anything? In case you are wondering:
True to my librarian roots, the yarns are organized in Dewey Decimal fashion. The yarn weights are as follows: 100 Lace, 200 Fingering, 300 Sport, 400 DK, 500 Worsted, 600 Aran, 700 Chunky, 800 Bulky, 900 Roving.
Each of the yarn bases I use are named after a different author.
100 Potter: "If you believe...clap your hands..."
200 London: "If you believe...clap your hands..."
 400 Alcott: The Mermaids' Lagoon

400 London: The Mermaids' Lagoon

The image of Peter was on display, to show where my inspiration came from.
400 Thoreau: Peter Pan, Pan & Hook, and Jas. Hook.
200 Herriot: Jas. Hook, Pan & Hook, and Peter Pan. Peter Pan in this weight and fiber is my favorite of the collection. This picture does not do justice to the vibrant green.

Beware of the tick, tick of that giant crocodile!

before 12

This book came in at the library tonight. It is called, Extra Yarn. The main character is Annabelle and she knits for everyone in her town, even the not so nice ones, and....she is a yarn bomber! I don't think I could knit for a hole tree, but I would love to knit a rainbow sweater for one of the trees by our house.

E. wanted me to take a picture of him as he was slept, on the night before his birthday. I can't believe he will be twelve tomorrow. I am quite sad, but so happy to have him.

end of July

Meaning to be an anniversary quilt, but turning out to be a birthday present instead.

Steeking on my drop shoulder sweater. Sewing and cutting, no problem; yet it would have been even better had I cut in the right spot. I'm so very glad to have an amazing teacher; after she had finished, one could find no error.

 Fooling around with the cat-cow.

Side by side swings, brilliant fun on a brilliant day.

tiger mode...

Eoghan wanted fingerless gloves (but they had to look like tiger paws). After Jonas saw this he deemed that he needed some as well, but they had to be blue. Once they are on Tiger mode and Triceratops mode spring into action.

leap toad over

When I showed Eoghan how to cast off his washcloth, I wanted to give him a rhyme to help him remember. I have had this book: First Book of Knitting for Children, and I knew it contained some of these knitting rhymes. I told Eoghan one of these, and we modified it for casting off. About three summers ago, Eoghan found some tadpoles in a pond and these to his delight turned into bumpy toads. He hasn't found any since, but we will continue to look. Their window of time for coming out must be very small and must always be different according to conditions here in Alaska. The knitting rhyme was based on this, and it goes:

Swim yourself over,
invite a friend too,
leap toad over,
to the bottom of the slough.

knitters day in

As I have been missing Knitters Night Out, I decided to have a Knitters Day In. As my friend Kris says, "All it takes is one person, to have a knitters night out.", but it is always better with two, so...

Eoghan has been knitting on a washcloth, and it has been taking quite a long time; as he usually only completes one row maybe two per sitting. I was thinking a little incentive would be nice. I know that this just doesn't sound right does it? An incentive to knit?!?! However, I thought we could have fun with this.

Eoghan loves animals and I happened to have some stashed away for his upcoming birthday, and using one isn't going to hurt.
I began to wrap and wrap and wrap...
...and added some notes for even more fun (this one happens to say "give mama a hug"), okay so it's fun for me too, but...
 it worked!
And guess what? He loved every minute of it!

It took him two afternoons, and it was a good thing to keep him a bit still; as we both have been trying to get over bronchitis. While we knitted I had tea and we listened to this: The Tale of Briar Bank (The Cottage Tales of Beatrix P). If you love Beatrix Potter and her works, you will love this series of books, named The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter by Susan Wittig Albert. There are eight books all together, and I would suggest starting with number one: The Tale of Hill Top Farm (The Cottage Tales of Beatrix P), but you don't have to. You will be able to catch on from anywhere in the series. The writer has a way of pulling you in and and letting you think you are right there in the English countryside, among very likable and intriguing little animals, very like Beatrix herself. You want to be sitting there listening to the gossip of the town folk and that of the animals. Also the narrator has a voice that loves to tell stories, and these mysteries are okay to listen to while kids are around. Listen to them with a cup of tea, a scone, and your knitting of course.

Afternoons very well spent.

Eoghan's knitting...and mine

He is still slowly but surely knitting his way through a washcloth...

and I am making something for a certain someone who loves the color blue.

robotico

He was waiting for him in the morning...
Dee, I finally finished him! It was a fun pattern and Jonas loves him, but don't worry Popcorn still has a place in his bed.

a gnome and his hat

Thank you so very much to everyone who voted for my favorite gnome and his hat. Eighth place nationally isn't bad. It was knit with Three Irish Girls Springvale Bulky in Copper River Delta (a custom yarn of our local area from the loveliest handwork shop I know: The Net Loft). Hip hip hooray for gnomes!

the Tomten

I have been working on this for what seems like forever. Well, not constantly though (that would make me an incredibly slow knitter). The pattern is Elizabeth Zimmermann's Modular Tomten Jacket. Why could I not finish it? Well...other projects were started, I wasn't sure if I wanted to felt it, I could not decide if I wanted a zipper or buttons (but then this wonderful family: "red dirt mother" gave me some marvelous hand made wooden buttons, thank you so much Liz and family!). It really could have gone on and on and on, but I finally said, "enough". Was it that I didn't like the pattern? Oh...heck...no! Any pattern by Elizabeth makes me oooohhhh. So here it is, I hope you like it as my Jonas does. Isn't he just the cutest little boy you have ever seen? Even if he is armed with a vacuum cleaner hose (I mean gun)... oh my, oh my oh.
