golden September

It's golden in the tree tops
It's golden in the sky,
It's golden, golden, golden,
September passing by.
from Autumn by Wynstones Press

Eoghan and I had a very good and messy time making these falling leaves. We used beeswax, dipping the leaves about 10-15 times each, then laid them to dry on wax paper. Eoghan found a beautifully smooth and curvy stick, and now they hang above our nature table. I love them and they smell so good.

my favorite is alas...the shortest

My favorite season, Autumn, is also our shortest season. Why is that? We woke up yesterday to find snow had been laid on our mountains, and this morning we received a visit from Jack Frost. We worked to put our garden in order, before we wake one morning to discover the snow on the mountains, has crept to the ground. We shall make the most of Autumn.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 30

So happy today, as our package arrived from our Seasons Round Exchange {Harvest} partner in the Netherlands. Our nature table items were received and are so beautiful! We have been anticipating this package in the mail, every time our box was checked Eoghan wondered if it would be our lucky day. He was so excited to find the package was here, as he had just arranged the table yesterday, had looked in the atlas to find the Netherlands, and was wondering if our partner had received her package yet. Hopefully she and her family will soon be holding our gifts with a smile.

LOVE this baby!Pumpkinny felted goodness.
This gnome feels like a guardian in our home. Our nature table bursting with orange love.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 29

Our weather tree was completed yesterday, and so came down. A new tree will welcome in Autumn, today. Welcome Autumn!

365 days of weather leaves

Guessing and counting up the sunny, cloudy, snowy, and rainy. Who would have believed the sun reigned in the rain forest?

30 Days of Happiness: Day 28

Happy Autumn (almost)!

We are happy to be curling up with our reading...

A different (but fun) spin into the classic story of The Three Bears.

Only in giving can we obtain happiness for ourselves.

We are never alone, we just have to choose to see. E. loves this theme.

Currently enjoying Johnny Appleseed from this volume.

We LOVE this book, and the music as well!

A very inspiring book on puppets and playing theatre for the whole family. We are saving items for scenery, props, and puppets already. Great fun as we turn more towards the "in".

A very good book that introduces wet on wet painting. It has some fun painting stories...to inspire painting time.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 27

Come little leaves, said the wind one day,
Come over the meadow with me and play,
Put on your dresses of red and gold,
The Summer has gone and the days grow cold.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 26

The sun is still streaming through our windows, and these sweet boys are off with their granny on a walk. I am sure that the lovely crisp Autumn weather, is making them friskier than usual. I hope they are having a grand time.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 25

So happy that the sun is shinning through our windows, but sad that I cannot be out in the gorgeous Autumn weather. It is definitely my favorite season, and the shortest in this part of Alaska.

However, the last of our harvest from our very small garden needed to be picked and brought in. E. did just that for me, washed it, and arranged it ever so nicely for dinner. The pods were pretty tough already, but we opened them, and the sweetest little peas were popped in our mouths.

The littlest pea.

J. just had to touch.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 23

E.'s sweet wax modeling that graces our nature table...

E. wished me to write:
When the waterfall runs,
the bear attacks the fish.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 22

This is a small tribute to these little lives we were in charge of, for a bit of time.

We had rescued some tadpoles from a pond (we were told that they never would have made it through the winter, as they came around too late in the season), and the boys delighted in watching them grow. E. kept notes with drawings, to mark their changes.

The toads with their tails almost gone, were doing just fine.
There were 10 that we had them for about one month, and we're going to take them to the pet store on Monday so that their habitat could be arranged into a more suitable terrarium. That morning however we found that they had all passed away. Maybe it was meant to be this way after all. E. was quite sad, and I am surprised by how much seeing them all gone like that affected me. We hope they are in a better place.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 17

We had a happy, sudsy time making felted soap with cousins. I had wanted to learn for a while now, and luckily this week a crafty cousin showed us how. J had fun just soaking his hands in the bubbles until they were quite pruny, pruny.

I think they will be grand, and will save the soap from being smooshed to pieces, as this is one of E.'s favorite activities. Much to our (un)delight.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 16

So happy...

I was able to make jam this year! My mom helped me all morning, and at lunch I continued on my own until evening. The work felt so satisfying, and our freezer is like a jewel case.

30 Days of Happiness: Day 11

Books=Happiness

Today we received a small package in the mail, it contained a book on our reading list for the year. Most of the books we read are checked out from our local library, our absolute favorites however are purchased. When we do this we try to obtain them from our local independent bookstore, but if they are not available, we go through independent bookstores online. The best is Powell's. And if it is used that is available, even better!

What I love most about used books, are the inscriptions inside. It makes my heart ache.
